After a glorious start to May with sunny evenings we were back to the old routine of hats and coats and playing in the gloom. However with two young sides on the field an enjoyable evening was had by all. Southam won the toss and chose to bowl. Liam Aspinall and Luke Haywood opened and put on 22 for the first pair with no outs which was a tremendous effort. They were followed by Scott Haywood and Harry Matthews who were equally resilient and again without losing a wicket increased the score by a further 12. Ben Matthews and William Hoggarth ran well and despite losing a wicket still put on 17 setting it up nicely for the final pair of Aaron Sutcliffe and Captain Will Eadon. Both hit excellent 4’s and despite losing only our second wicket of the evening put on 24 to give a competitive total of 275.
Captain Will E. led from the front and took a good caught and bowled in the first over and this followed by a maiden from Scott put pressure on Southam. William H and Liam continued the good work including a run out by Ben. More good tight bowling in the middle overs by Harry and Ben and an excellent run out by a direct hit by Liam meant Southam needed 58 from the last 8 overs. This was an uphill task as by good fielding and a clean bowled by William H the score was always kept in check. In the last overs Aaron battled on despite the cold weather and with an economical spell by Liam and another wicket for Will E Long Itchington ran out winners by 27 runs. Special mention to the way Will E captained the side always encouraging despite the conditions and to Luke Haywood who did admirably behind the stumps.
